In the fall of 1963, only 16 years after the 1947 fatal crash of the Temporal Voyager at Roswell, New Mexico, I arrived at the Amundsen Scott South Pole Station located deep in the heart of Antarctica. Thus began the 384 days of my most isolated assignment during my twenty years with the U.S. Navy Seabees. Soon after my arrival, we received the dreadful news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy and I walked out to the actual polar site to lower the flag to half-staff. As I walked out to the pole over snow untouched by our equipment, I noticed the beauty of the wind-sculpted patterns in the snow and realized that effect was the Sastrugi I had heard about before. And so, many years later when I could not find a suitable and available name for my Web site, I chose Sastrugi!
During the long, dark polar winter, we all had a lot of empty time on our hands and I often thought about the lesson of JFK and the Sastrugi. Clearly, external forces often sculpt our lives that we, like the snow, cannot avoid. Near the end of my 384 days at the South Pole, I felt influenced by the disappointment of reading several poorly written novels to believe that I could and should write a novel. Many years later, I wrote my first novel, now titled "They Will Live Again!"
